Summer Camps 2023

There are many options for music students to develop their skills over the summer. As we find out about more camps and other programs, we will post them here as a resource for families. Musicians are also invited to jam at Romeo’s in Lynnwood once a month throughout the year, including summer. See the EWHS Music Calendar for dates.

2023 EWHS Jazz Colony – paperwork due 6/5!
Starting Tuesday 7/11 6-8 pm, then weekly on Tuesday evenings through summer

  • Summer Jazz School for EWHS Students – run by Jake Bergevin and Pete Bennett
  • EWHS Jazz Students placed in Small Combo Ensembles with Professionals (2-3)
  • Guest Artists – short clinic. Also playing at: Sea Jazz and Final Performance.
  • Emphasis on playing and getting good. – 14th year!
  • 8 Sessions in EWHS/Combos and 1 Sea Jazz Gig at End – Wed 8/30/23, 5-8 pm
  • Cost: $175.00 per Student (least expensive summer camp you will find!)
  • Where: EWHS Band Room

University of Montana Summer Music Camps – Filling up fast!!

July 23-28 at UM in Missoula, MT

  • Offered by University of Montana since 1952
  • Options include the jazz session (week 3) with or without board
  • Accommodation and meals are provided in student dorms
  • Applications accepted until space runs out

Edmonds School District – Summer Music School

June 28-July 14, MTHS, 21801 44th Ave W, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043

  • Grades 6-12
  • Diverse mix of music performance and exploratory opportunities
  • If primary instrument not voice, one year instrumental music experience required
  • Concert Band or Orchestra, Concert Choir, Vocal/Instrumental Jazz, Vocal/Instrumental Ensembles, electives

Chamber Music Guild Music Camp
July 10-15, Seattle Waldorf High School, 7777 62nd Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98115

  • Intermediate- and advanced-level violin, viola, cello, string bass, and piano students ages 13-24 are eligible for enrollment
  • Exploring and learning through chamber music
  • Students assigned to small ensembles, based on their application materials and audition video
  • Recorded video audition is required for all students to facilitate placement in an appropriate ensemble

Seattle Youth Symphony Summer Music Camps
July 10-21, Shorecrest High School, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155

  • Two-week, half day camp for Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion
  • Musicians 9-15 years old with 2+ year playing experience (winds/ brass: 1+ years), who read music

Cornish School of Creative Arts, Seattle
July 10-August 5 at Cornish College of the Arts in South Lake Union, Seattle

  • Morning-only or full-day, with chosen electives in afternoon
  • Register for Music Foundations class at two levels

Seattle Saxophone Institute – Neil Welch

July 17-20 (Gr. 9-12), July 10-13 (Gr. 7-9) at Phinney Ridge Community Center, Seattle

  • Camp for saxophone players directed by Evan Smith and Neil Welch
  • High School session (July 17-20) for students going into grades 9-12
  • Middle school session (July 10-13)for students going into grades 7-9

Cascade Youth Symphony Summer Sounds
July 24-28, Alderwood Community Church, 3403 Alderwood Mall Blvd., Lynnwood, WA 98037

  • Summer Sounds: played in an orchestra or band for at least 3 years, OR part of CYSO last year or a previous year, OR CYSO music director has indicated summer sounds is right for student

Seattle JazzED Camps – Various

Summer Second Line Project – July 24-28

  • Grades 6-12
  • Inspired by long time New Orleans second line tradition
  • Students from one year of instrument experience up to advanced

Summer Jazz Ambassadors – July 31-Aug 11

  • Grades 5-12
  • Performance training combined with community outreach
  • Range of age and skill levels, from some experience to advanced
  • Service hours available for high schoolers

Summer Jazz Lab – Aug 14-18

  • Grades 9-12
  • Learn to approach jazz with a holistic understanding of its history and development
  • Develop aural skills to advance improv technique
  • Work closely with faculty in small ensembles, masterclasses, and group discussion

CWU Jazz Camp – Central Washington University

July 24-29 at CWU Campus in Ellensburg, WA

  • For students at all skill levels entering grades 9-12
  • For instruments: alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, vibes, bass, drum set
  • Options available for accommodation and meals in newly renovated student residences
  • Curriculum: Jazz Theory and Arranging, Instrument Masterclass, Improvisation, Ensemble Playing, Jazz History

Centrum: Jazz Port Townsend – The Workshop

July 24-30 in Port Townsend, WA

  • Celebrated workshop open to instrumentalists and singers high school-aged and above
  • Applications accepted via audition process; open until all spots are filled
  • Options for online, in-person, with/without full board, scholarships, and more

Seattle Jazz Camp
Aug 14-18 at Phinney Ridge Community Center, Seattle

  • Immersion focused jazz camp directed by Jay Thomas and Michael Van Bebber
  • Accelerated learning in small groups, focused on Hard Bop
  • Open performance on last day for friends and family
