Attention to all EWHS Seniors participating in a jazz ensemble:
Applications for the Miles Laven Memorial Jazz Scholarship are now open. The scholarship will award up to $1,500 to a graduating senior vocalist or instrumentalist from Edmonds-Woodway High School planning to attend a postsecondary institution to study music who has demonstrated leadership, creativity, and musical excellence in jazz. The deadline to apply is Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 11:59 pm PST.
In order to apply, applicants must:
- Complete this application, which includes a few short-answer questions and a video recording (5 minutes or less) of a performance that demonstrates their skills as a jazz musician.
- Provide two recommendations; one from their EWHS jazz music teacher and one from another adult (i.e. teacher, counselor, private music teacher, pastor etc.). Recommenders should not provide a traditional letter of recommendation. Instead, please use this Google form.
If you have any issues completing the application or accessing the forms, please contact Sarah Laven Jones at “sarahmarabeth at gmail dot com”. Any video recordings that are too large to be uploaded can either be shared directly with Sarah via email or as a YouTube link.
About the Miles Lavel Memorial Jazz Scholarship
The Laven family established the Miles Laven Memorial Jazz Scholarship to honor the late jazz musician and composer Miles Laven. He played drums in the EWHS Jazz Band and in various other ensembles during his high school years from 2009 to 2013 and went on to study at Manhattan School of Music.
PLEASE NOTE: This scholarship is only available to a graduating senior vocalist or instrumentalist from Edmonds-Woodway High School, planning to attend a post-secondary institution to study music, and who has demonstrated leadership, creativity, and musical excellence in jazz.
